The First Week

Taking her home:
When they let us go home, we were both so relieved.  It seemed like everytime one of us would finally fall asleep someone else would come in. We were both excited to get her home, be comfortable, and well, be on our own.  JM already had the carseat base hooked in so we strapped her in her carseat and the nurse walked us out.  JM locked her in and helped me in the back.  Man, that seat was HARD.  Good thing there was an old hunting seat pad.  I propped half my butt on it to take some of the pressure off. I hadn't really anticipated the consequences of a hard seat nor did I think about how what once was a smooth ride might not be so smooth.  As we were pulling out of the parking lot, I just felt so proud.  We had finally done it.  9 months ago we could only dream about this moment and we were finally here! We are real parents.  JM gets out onto route 16 and goes "Brittany was right; This is the softest you'll ever drive. I don't care if people pass me."  I just giggled.  Her head kind of jiggled around a little bit even though it was inbetween the special insert.  I had to hold her head, even though she was fine, I just didn't like how she was kind of jiggling up and down.

Home at Last:
JM told me to get inside and wouldnt' let me help carry anything in.  So of course I snapped a picture of him carrying her in.

I got us settled in as JM carried in all our "stuff".  We spent that afternoon by ourselves just taking her in.  Mom and Marisa came up that night (Thursday) and stayed until Saturday morning.  We then had our girl to ourselves for awhile and spent our first real night alone.  Samee was having some issues with having milk come up and out her nose so we decided to have her sleep in her little seat so she was elevated.  It was also a lot easier to put the seat in her pack 'n' play so that I didn't have to be nervous about hearing her on the monitor OR go back and forth.  We had originally wanted her to sleep in her crib from the start but now have the goal of moving her in there when she sleeps in longer increments.

We knew Samantha was looking a little yellow so we had her sunbathing --

Mom, Dad, Marisa, and Nancy came up Sunday evening for supper and to see Samantha.  Everyone but Mom went home that evening.  Mom and I loaded Samantha up for her first doctor's appointment.  Doctor Ioffe is "something else".  Very german and talks very fast.  She's also pretty funny.  I had warned Mom ahead of time but Dr. Ioffe still kind of takes you by surprise.  Sam looked a little yellow so we had to go down to the lab and get a bilirubin test for jaundice.  We wanted the number 12 for the test but got a 14.8 - uh oh.  Breastfed babies have a different curve for jaundice.  All babies have it a little bit and it peaks and then starts to go down after they are born.  Well, breastfed babies tend to peak a little later than formula fed so we had to go back on Wednesday to test her levels again.
Mom headed home on Monday.  I wasn't quite cleared to drive yet and Grandma Keach wanted to come up and spend time with Samantha  anyways so she came up on Tuesday and spent the night.  Grandma came up and fixed my FAVORITE meal.  Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, noodles, and ROLLS.  yum yum yum.

Wednesday's doctor's appointment went well.  Her test number came back at an 11 so we were under the 12 and were cleared from being jaundiced.  Yea! Grandma headed home that afternoon after I took a much needed nap.

Thursday and Friday we were on our own again but JM was able to come home early because of all the rain.  As I look back over the last week and 1/2 it doesn't seem like it has been that long at all.  It all has kind of blurred together.  Now Sam and I have our own little schedule we go by during the day and night and it works.  Being a mom is exhausting and fulfilling all in the same.  Everyday she does something new and changes in some small way.  I love just watching her. I could spend all day doing it... and I do!
